Junior Brian Parker leads VASJ's All-Ohio boys basketball honorees
A trio of Villa Angela-St. Joseph High School juniors, led by Division III co-player of the year Brian Parker, highlighted the All-Ohio team released by the Associated Press on March 18.
Parker, who averaged 17.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 5.5 assists per game, was named an AP Ohio co-player of the year in D-III along with Carlas Jackson of St. Bernard Roger Bacon and Martyce Kimbrough of Lima Central Catholic.
“Brian has played outstanding basketball for us all year and deserves this, but the great thing about him and all of our guys is that the individual honors don’t mean nearly as much as the team goal of winning another state championship,” VASJ coach Babe Kwasniak said. “To me, as a coach, that is what is special.”
Vikings star Carlton Bragg, who missed five games with a toe injury, was named 2nd team All-Ohio. Bragg, a 6-foot-10, nationally ranked recruit, averaged 18.8 points and 8.8 rebounds per game.
VASJ junior center Dererk Pardon was a special mention All-Ohio selection. Pardon is averaging a double-double for the Vikings this season with 11.5 points and 10.6 rebounds per night.
VASJ (21-7) will play Columbus Bishop Ready in a D-III state semifinal at 10:45 a.m. on March 21. The Vikings are the reigning Division IV state champions and are in search of the program’s sixth state crown.
A win this weekend would complete a sweep of state titles in each of Ohio’s four divisions, something never accomplished by any team in boys basketball in the Buckeye State.
